Three cheers for Charlie
I went, again, to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I think I must be sick from all the sweets consumed, but I can't get enough Factory. And I think the third time was even better than the first two times. Burton, when he strikes gold, has a way of capturing the audience by grabbing their humanity and wrecking their heart and then taking them on a wild journey into his strange and deluded mind. "Daddy...I want a new pony." "Daddy, I want a trained squirrel" "Let's be friends (Veruca Salt)....Best Friends (Violet Beauregard)" "MUMBLER! I really can't understand a word that you are saying." "You smell like peanuts (Grandma Georgina)...You smell like (dramatic pause) old people.....and soap (Willy Wonka)." This movie has some amazing zingers, but the true heart is Charlie, as it was always meant to be. When he brings the Golden Ticket home and the decision is being made amongst his family who will escort him to the Factory, Charlie speaks up and declares that no one will be going. He wants to sell the ticket because he feels the family needs the money. And then the crotchety old grandpa takes Charlie aside and declares that money is common and comes and goes, but this ticket is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to seize the moment, well it's really heartwarming. And gold is struck again with Danny Elfman (not necessarily with the Oompa Loompa music, though I am working through that, but with the background score...Dynamite).
